UNION — For the second year in a row the Ladies of Augsburg Lutheran Church served up a very special breakfast to some very special people on their special day.

Friday was Veterans Day and in Union County that means a day of special events honoring the men and women of the community who have served America in the uniforms of its armed services in peacetime and/or in war.

While Veterans Day has always been a special day in Union County which has traditionally gone to great lengths to honor its veterans, in 2015 a new tradition of honoring veterans began at Augsburg Lutheran Church.

That was the year the Ladies of Augsburg Lutheran Church cooked and served their first Veterans Day Breakfast to the veterans of Union County. It’s a tradition that continued this year.

On Friday, in the church’s social hall which was decorated with American flags and other patriotic imagery including a sign that reminded all those who saw it that “Freedom Isn’t Free. Thank You, Veterans,” the Ladies served breakfast to 72 veterans.

The breakfast was the first special event of a special day honoring special men and women whose service to America the rest of their countrymen can never honor enough.

While it was their day to be honored, one veteran, Modest Keenan, was persuaded to stand sing “The Lord’s Prayer” during the breakfast. The song, performed acapella, was a reminder that freedom is a gift from God and that in fighting to defend freedom, the veterans of the armed forces of America — the land of the free — have indeed fought the good fight.
