WHITMIRE — Five Whitmire Wolverines football players were named to the 2016 Class A-Region 1 All-Region football team.
The Whitmire honorees to earn the recognition were five seniors:
Devin Vo — Vo is a senior wingback/linebacker who was elected Team Captain by his teammates. He was nominated for Newberry Touchdown Club “Player of the Year” consideration by the Whitmire coaching staff and is a two-time All-Region selection and a two-time All-County selection. Vo was responsible for 3,082 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns during his high school career as a runner, receiver and kick returner.
Colton Evans — Evans is a senior linebacker and four-year letterman for the Wolverines. Evans was named All-Region and All-County, and he is the team’s leading tackler.
Noah Armstrong — Armstrong is a senior offensive lineman and defensive tackle. He was elected Team Captain and named both All-Region and All-County. Coach Charlie Jenkins said Armstrong was a steady and dependable team leader as a center and right tackle during the three seasons he started on the offensive line. Armstrong also represented Whitmire High School at Palmetto Boys State 2016, is a member of the BETA Club, and maintains a 3.875 GPA.
Daquan Agnew — Agnew is a senior defensive tackle and offensive lineman and a three-year starter for the Wolverines. In addition to being named All-Region, Agnew represented Whitmire High School at Palmetto Boys State 2016 and is a member of the BETA Club, holding a 3.861 GPA.
Culan Means — Means is a senior defensive end and offensive lineman who was an All-Region selection and a member of the All-County Academic Team. Means represented Whitmire High School at Palmetto Boys State 2016, was elected BETA Club Secretary, and holds a 4.065 GPA.
“For a player or a coach, I hold the All-Region team in high regard,” said Whitmire Head Coach Charlie Jenkins. “The coaches in your region — the men who watch all your games in person as they play you and on video as they prepare to play you — have selected you as one of the best that they have seen this year.”
Jenkins said he is proud of his players who were selected.
“All of our Whitmire guys are certainly worthy of the honor, and we are super proud of how hard they have worked and how they have represented our program on and off the field,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins explained that the All-Region team players are carefully chosen.
“Statewide teams picked by the media often have people picking the teams who haven’t even seen all the players play,” Jenkins said. “They go by word of mouth and by a school’s history and reputation sometimes. All-Region is more personal and more legitimate. I like that.”
