UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets are the Region II-AAAA Champions.

This year’s “Jacket Bowl” ended in a 42-28 victory for home team Union County, as the team defeated the Greer Yellow Jackets to secure the first-place spot in their region.

Union County standout wide receiver Shi Smith — who committed to The University of South Carolina before the beginning of this season — caught four touchdown passes from QB Brandon Thompson during Friday’s game, and Smith finished with 10 receptions for 174 yards.

Quadric Smith also caught a touchdown pass from Thompson in the first half of the game, and DeShaun Holmes scored on a two-yard touchdown run. Union County led Greer 28-14 at the half.

In the second half, Shi Smith caught another touchdown pass on the opening drive, putting Union County ahead 35-14, and in the 4th quarter, Smith caught his fourth touchdown pass of the game putting Union County’s 42 points on the board. The Yellow Jackets were able to keep Greer’s score at 28 points.

Union County’s Coach Bradley Adams said he felt like his team had really come together as one over the last month, bringing the team’s motto for the season — “One blood” — to life.

Last week’s game improved Union County’s record to 5-4 overall, 3-0 in region play. This Friday, the Yellow Jackets will go on the road to Travelers Rest to take on the Devildogs for their last game of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Travelers Rest’s overall record is 2-7, and they are 0-3 in region play. Last week, Travelers Rest was shut out by Pickens in a final score of 26-0.
