UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets look to secure a first-place spot in their region as they take on Greer Friday in this year’s “Battle of the Yellow Jackets.”
Union County led Blue Ridge throughout last Thursday’s game, which ended in a final score of 46-3 and preserved Union County’s undefeated record in Region II-4A play.
The Yellow Jackets first put points on the board last Thursday when AJ Hunter intercepted the ball and ran 30 yards for the touchdown. Union County’s Coach Bradley Adams said the play set a good tone for the team, and he wants the team’s defense to have the ability to win games for them.
Other highlights included Union County QB Brandon Thompson throwing touchdown passes to Quadric Smith, Devon Jeter and future South Carolina Gamecock Shi Smith.
Thursday’s game put the Yellow Jackets at 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in region play. This week, they will host Greer — also 2-0 in region play, 5-2 on the season — to battle for first place in the region, as only one more game after this one will remain in the regular season.
Last year, Greer defeated Union County during the regular season, but Union County defeated Greer in the third round of state playoffs.
Coach Adams said this Friday’s game is sure to be a dogfight, and he believes both teams are well aware of that. He said the team will focus on being prepared and healthy for Friday night.
The Union County Yellow Jackets vs. the Greer Yellow Jackets game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Union County Stadium.
