UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets will look for redemption in Boiling Springs this Friday after a heartbreaking three-point loss to Ridge View last week.
Union County led the Ridge View Blazers during much of Friday’s game. Standout Yellow Jackets wide receiver Shi Smith caught nine passes for 104 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with an injury, and then returning in the fourth quarter to return a punt for 43 yards to score. One highlight of the game occurred just before the end of the first half when Smith made a spectacular one-handed catch which erupted the crowd at Union County Stadium and resulted in a video which “went viral” online afterwards.
In the fourth quarter, however, the Blazers’ Ronald Brown recovered a fumble by Jalen Smith in the end zone to tie the game at 30. The Jackets’ next drive was unsuccessful, and Ridge View was able to pull off a 23-yard field goal to take a 33-30 lead and the win.
Union County Coach Bradley Adams said after the game that he believes his team should have been victorious. Adams said he and his coaching staff are working to make players understand what it takes to be good, and to be disciplined.
The Union County Yellow Jackets — now 2-3 for the season — will go back on the road this Friday to take on the undefeated Boiling Springs Bulldogs (4-0). Friday’s game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
