UNION — The supporters of a local high school athlete hoping to compete in this year’s Junior Olympics are just $700 away from their fundraising goal.
Alexis Garrett — a rising senior at Union County High School — has participated in track for the past six years at UCHS. This summer, she began running with the BSYAA (Boiling Springs Youth Athletic Association) AAU team.
Last month, Garrett participated in the region meet, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, where she set her personal record at 15.11 and 5’0, respectively. That meet qualified her for the 2015 Junior Olympic Games, which will be held in Norfolk, Va. Aug. 1-8.
In order to raise funds for the trip, Garrett’s supporters held fundraisers for her this past week, cooking and selling food, first, on Thursday at the Union County School District Office and again on Saturday at the Union County Stadium.
The Garrett supporters taking part in last week’s fundraisers included Imani Richard who said that as of Saturday afternoon the group was nearly three-quarters of the way to achieving their fundraising goal.
“We’ve done fairly well, we’re close to our goal,” Richard said Monday morning. “Our goal is $2,500 and we’ve raised around $1,800.”
Richard said the fundraising effort is continuing and that anyone wanting to make a donation either in cash or by check they may drop it off at the Union County School District Office or Union County High School. She said that if the donation is by check, the check should be made out to the Union County School District.
