UNION — A scholarship was awarded to a high school graduate and free school supplies were distributed to children about to begin a new school year during the Union County Prayer Foundation’s Back To School Bash Saturday afternoon.
The Union County Prayer Foundation was founded three years ago by Ysante McDowell who said “the Lord laid it on my heart” to undertake an effort to bring people of the community together to support one another and the children of the community. McDowell said originally she wasn’t certain how successful she would be, but when she began to get a response from the community, she established the Foundation as a continuing effort.
Part of the Foundation’s focus in on the education of the young. That focus includes the annual presentation of a scholarship to a high achieving high school graduate. McDowell said that last year, the Foundation awarded scholarships to two local high school graduates. This year’s recipient was Damisha Bryant, a Union County High School graduate and member of Community Missionary Church who will be attending Lander University, who was presented the scholarship by McDowell during Saturday’s Back To School Bash.
In addition to the presentation of the scholarship, the Foundation distributed free school supplies to the children in attendance. The supplies distributed included paper, notebooks, pencils, pens, and crayons.
The Back To School Bash also featured a number of vendors, face painting courtesy of Pooh’s Playhouse, musical entertainment provided by Choir Boy Cam and The Crew and Royal Diamond. Jeff Bailey, Republican candidate for Union County Sheriff, spoke during the event. Impressions Outreach, a mentoring program also participated, and there was a financial workshop. There were also drawings for the adults and small gifts for the children.
McDowell said she was very pleased with Saturday’s event and that the Foundation will continue to work to bring people together and support the children of Union County.
“It was just a blessing to all,” McDowell said.
