UNION COUNTY — No admission will be charged but donations will be appreciated at “Music and Miracles Community Fun Day” this afternoon at the Union County Fairgrounds.
Music and Miracles Community Fun Day will begin at 3 p.m. and continue into the evening. It is part of the ongoing effort by the Miracle League of Union County to raise to funds for the construction of the all-inclusive “ALLstar Park” at the Timken Sports Complex. The park, which will be located next to the MLUC ball field at the complex, will be designed to provide play and recreation for everyone including children and adults with disabilities or diseases like multiple sclerosis, older adults with physical challenges, injured veterans, and children with Autism.
Construction of the park is projected to cost $350,000 and is being financed with a combination of donations and funds raised by the MLUC in cooperation with other local organizations. The MLUC kicked off its fundraising efforts in February by staging a fashion show in cooperation with the Union Civitan Club and the Belk store.
On May 24, in a ceremony attended by local government officials, representatives of local institutions and the business community, Miracle League families and other supporters, the MLUC broke ground for the “ALLstar Park.” During the ceremony, MLUC friend Barbara Rippy presented MLUC Executive Director Amy Austin with a check for $5,000. In presenting Austin with the check, Rippy also called for the eight gold-painted shovels used to break ground to be auctioned off at $100 apiece. The ensuing auction raised $1,700 including $1,000 paid by an individual for one of the shovels.
In addition to the funds raised at the groundbreaking, donations to the MLUC’s fundraising effort include a $75,000 grant from the Timken Foundation, a $10,000 donation from the Union Rotary Club, and donations from private individuals like a $3,000 donation the MLUC received in January. The MLUC is in the process of trying to raise funds to match the grant from the Timken Foundation which will donate another $75,000 if the matching funds are raised by the end of July.
That effort continues this afternoon with the Music and Miracles Community Fun Day at the Fairgrounds.
