UNION COUNTY — A drive-in movie at the Union County Fairgrounds will be the first of a series of family-oriented events the Union County Recreation Department plans to sponsor beginning this summer.
In his report to Union County Council Tuesday evening, Supervisor Frank Hart announced that the Recreation Department plans to sponsor a drive-in movie at the Fairgrounds on July 23. Hart said the drive-in movie will be part of a series of family events the department plans to sponsor over the course of the summer. He said the goal of the department is to provide summer fun that the whole family can enjoy.
Recreation Department Director Dolton Williams said Friday that the movie that will be shown July 23 will be “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Williams said the Recreation Department is renting a 40-foot screen to show the movie on and that the sound will be broadcast over FM radio which can be picked up on car radios. He said there will be vendors selling food, popcorn, and drinks.
Williams said that gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 per car. Since the movie will not be shown until 8:45 p.m. there will be other forms of entertainment between the opening of the gates and showtime. He said plans are for there to be live music and other activities for those in attendance as they await the start of the movie.
A second movie is scheduled to be shown at the fairgrounds on Aug. 13, but Williams said the movie to be shown has not been selected yet.
Williams said that while the movies are being offered as summertime fun for the family, the Recreation Department is hoping to sponsor similar events on a monthly basis. He said that sometimes they may be more drive-in movies, sometimes movies on the ground where people can bring blankets or chairs to set on while they watch the show, as well as other activities.
“We want to do some community events on a monthly basis,” Williams said. “We want to have something fun for all families at least once a month.”
