GREER — Union County fell short to Greer in Friday’s annual Yellow Jacket Bowl.
The final score of Friday’s game was 35-28 even though Union County put up a fight, tying the score in the final minutes of the game.
Greer took a 14-0 lead in the first half after touchdown passes from their QB Mario Cusano. Union fired back in the final minutes of the second quarter with a 16-yard touchdown run by Union County QB De’Airrius Smith, making the score 14-7.
In the beginning of the third quarter, Greer’s Troy Pride scored a touchdown, and Union County’s Smith answered with two touchdown runs — one for one yard and the other for six yards — tying the game at 21. Smith also passed for 348 yards.
Coach Steve Taneyhill said he was proud of Smith’s effort, delivering some unbelievably big plays.
Greer snatched two interceptions in the fourth quarter, setting up for another score and giving Greer the 28-21 lead.
Union County’s Smith then connected with an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Shi Smith, tying the game 28-28.
Even though Union County nearly intercepted Cusano twice during Greer’s final drive, Greer was able to score and get the 35-28 win.
Union County will host Abbeville this Friday in another non-conference match-up.
