UNION — The “Friends on Main … Books & More” bookstore is now at its new location and looking for volunteers to help staff it when it resumes operations in January.

Originally located in the old Greene’s Salvage Groceries Store building at 126 East Main Street, Union, Friends on Main … Books & More has been closed since the end of June to allow the Friends of the Union County Carnegie Library which operates the bookstore to do a complete inventory of the books and other media it has in stock.

Friday evening, however, the bookstore celebrated its Grand Opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception at its new location in the L.W. Long Resource Center (the historic Community Hospital Building) at 213 West Main Street, Union.

Taking part in the ceremony to help formally open the bookstore at its new location were Friends of the Library board members and volunteers along with other supporters and Modest Keenan of the L.W. Long Resource Center Board.

Keenan spoke during the ceremony, pointing out the Friends on Main … Books & More bookstore is a good match for the L.W. Long Resource Center because “what better resource is there than a bookstore.”

Also speaking during Friday’s ceremony was Friends of the Library President Rebecca Rochester who thanked Keenan and his fellow members of the L.W. Long Resource Center Board for allowing the group to move the bookstore to the center and for all their work getting it ready for them. Rochester pointed out that, unlike the bookstore’s old location, the L.W. Long Resource Center has lights, heat, air, two restrooms, a roof that doesn’t leak, and freshly painted walls. She said this was all due to the efforts of the L.W. Long Resource Center Board to renovate and refurbish the building so it can resume its mission of serving the community.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, those in attendance got to enjoy pizza, cookies, tea, and lemonade in front room of the store which offers customers thousands of books to choose from. Those in attendance also had the opportunity to win $3 gift certificates they can use in purchasing books at the store.

Persons interested in volunteering at Friends on Main … Books & More bookstore beginning in January are asked to call 864-466-6981.
