JONESVILLE — The faculty, staff, and student body of Jonesville Elementary/Middle School got some early holiday cheer this week when Dollar General donated $10,000 to the school.

Since its opening in 2005, the Dollar General Distribution Center has been deeply involved with the Jonesville Community, including Jonesville Elementary/Middle School. During those 12 years Dollar General has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the community through monetary and other donations to the community and to the school. It demonstrated that commitment to the community once again this past Wednesday when a delegation of the Distribution Center’s management visited the school.

The visit was a surprise for JEMS Principal Kathy Taylor who was soon even more surprised — and delighted — when Distribution Center Human Resources Manager Shawn Johnson presented her with a check for $10,000.

“Each year we do a Community Giving Campaign, so this year we went to Jonesville Elementary/Middle School,” Johnson said. “They are in close proximity to our distribution center and a lot of our associates’ children go here and we want to thank them for all they do.”

Johnson also presented Taylor with an accompanying letter from Dollar General Corporation Senior Director of Community Initiatives Denine Torr about the company’s decision to donate the funds to JEMS.

Dollar General recognizes the important role Jonesville Elementary and Middle School plays in developing the youth of tomorrow. As the holiday season approaches, we would like to show our appreciation for the beautiful work the faculty and staff does for your students each and every day. We hope the enclosed donation in the amount of $10,000 will help strengthen the school’s library and literacy initiatives.

Touched by Dollar General’s generosity, Taylor praised the company and the distribution center, not only for the donation, but also their years of support for the school.

“If I can even find the words,” Taylor said. “We are just very blessed to have Dollar General. I’ve been here for three years and every year they’ve made donations to school. They’ve also given us stocking stuffers and back to school supplies. They go above and beyond. We really appreciate them.”

Taylor said the school would use the donation to acquire resources and materials for its literacy programs that help students who are struggling with reading.
