Housing Authority Meeting

The Commissioners of the Housing Authority of Union will meet Monday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. at 201 Porter Street, Union.

Senior Citizens

The Union County Senior Citizens will have their annual Holiday Meal on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Mon-Aetna Church Social Hall.

David Lawson will be providing the holiday music.

Walk Into The Holidays

Kick off the holiday season with “Walk Into The Holidays” on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 5-8 p.m.

The event, which will be held on Main Street in downtown Union, will involve local businesses who, according to the flyer advertising it, will “help you with all your gift needs!” Those businesses and the bargains they will be offering that day include:

• Elle Bell Cafe — $2 off Candles and Record Album Bowls and $24 for a Hanging Plant.

• Keepsake Jewelers — Silver Jewelry 60% off and Gold Jewelry 30 percent off.

• Smith’s Jewelry Store — Layaway $10 down and 25% off Watches and South Gates Jewelry.

• Something Special — Christmas Items 20% off and Home Decor 30% off (excluding collectibles).

In addition, the flyer states the Union County Museum will be open.

The event will also feature the Union County Arts Council’s “Local Artists Showcase” and “Walk into the Holidays Chalk Walk.”

Storybook Breakfast

Delta Kappa Gamma, Sigma chapter (an educational sorority) is sponsoring a Storybook Breakfast on Saturday, November 18 at Monarch Elementary Cafeteria from 10-11:30 a.m.

Children and parents will enjoy a pancake breakfast among themed tables from favorite storybooks, create crafts, and listen as characters bring stories to life as they read.

Tickets are $10 per person and are being sold by DKG members (located at the elementary schools), Something Special, and WBCU.

Woodmen Of The World

The Woodmen of the World will meet Tuesday, November 21 at 6 p.m. at Woodmen Park.

Ladies, please bring a covered dish.

Career And Technology Center Open House

The Union County Career and Technology Center will host an Open House on Thursday, November 30 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Parents will be able to tour our facility, meet instructors, and see student work samples.

This is open to the community.

Parents will be able to make plans for their student’s future.

We look forward to seeing everyone there.

November At The UCAC

The following events and activities will be held at the UCAC Art Gallery on Main Street in downtown Union this month.

Painting with Coffee — Whether you are a beginner, or a lifelong artists join us every Tuesday morning a.m. 10 a.m.!

Writers Group — Local Writers will meet Tuesday, November 14 at 6 p.m. This is open to everyone!

Monday Night Music — Looking for something new to do? Join us Monday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m. for a night full of local, musical talent!

Local Artists Showcase — Stop by our gallery to browse the local art that is on display this holiday season! We have pieces from several different Union County Artists, all of which are for sale! This is the perfect opportunity for you to purchase a unique Christmas gift for that hard to buy for person!

Main Street’s “Walk into the Holidays” Chalk Walk — Thursday, November 16, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Art is the theme and chalk is the medium!

We invite everyone, children, teenagers, and adults to join us on Main Street as we paint downtown! You will have 1 hour to complete your artwork. UCAC will provide you with a section of sidewalk and all the chalk you will need!

We want everyone to participate in the event! Children, adults, Girl & Boy Scout Troops, church groups, professionals and beginners! There is a spot for everyone!

Winners will be announced at 6 p.m.

Day Trip To Harrah’s

Come join Betsy & Company along with the Over The Hill Gang Relay for Life Team for a fun-filled day trip to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino on Saturday, Nov. 11.

7 a.m. pick up at Jonesville Municipal Building, 7:30 a.m. pick up in Union at the old Walmart parking lot, 8:15 a.m. pick up in Spartanburg at Ingles on Pine Street.

CCA Energy Assistance

The Union County Office of Carolina Community Actions, Inc. (CCA) is currently taking applications to assist low-income families with home energy cooling bills and a variety of other programs and services.

Households may be assisted with home energy bills up to $1,000, HVAC unit repairs or replacements, air conditioner units. Other programs and services include rental assistance, General Education Degrees (GED), tuition for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), job training, child care, medical prescriptions, nutrition education and food vouchers.

Applications are taken Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 201 E. Main Street, Suite A, Union, SC. Family households must be income eligible and provide documentation to qualify. For more information, please call the Union County Community Actions office at 864-427-0336.

Carolina Community Actions, Inc. LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) and GEAP (General Emergency Assistance Program) is funded through the Department of Health and Human Services and administered through the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) in Columbia, SC. CCA is a private non-profit corporation whose mission is to promote self-reliance of low-income individual and families by forming partnerships which will provide a systematic reduction of the causes and conditions of poverty.

Documentation

CCA can provide Non-Emergency Assistance; Emergency Assistance; and Mortgage, Rent, Water Assistance to qualified low-income families. The following documents are required to obtain these types of assistance:

Non-Emergency Assistance

Non-Emergency Assistance is provided where there is no past due bill.

1. South Carolina picture ID with current address

2. Social Security cards for all household members

3. Proof of total gross household income for the last 30 days:

• Weekly, bi-monthly or monthly check stubs

• 2017 Social Security Benefits Award Letter

• UI (Unemployment Insurance) benefits printout and a current job search

4. Copy of the current unpaid energy bill (must be in the name of the applicant or a household member)

Emergency Assistance

Emergencies include bills that are within 5 days of disconnect, decrease in income, extreme weather conditions, and other unforeseen incidents.

1. South Carolina picture ID with current address

2. Social Security cards for all household members

3. Proof of total gross household income for the last 30 days:

• Weekly, Bi-monthly or monthly check stubs

• 2017 Social Security Benefits Award Letter

• UI (Unemployment Insurance) benefits printout and a current job search

4. Last 3 (three) energy bills from utility vendor (a current stamped-account history printout

may be required for various vendors)

5. A receipt indicating disallowed fees on the energy bill are paid i.e. outdoor lights, round up fees, etc.)

Mortgage, Rent, Water Assistance

1. South Carolina picture ID with current address

2. Social Security cards for all household members

3. Proof of total gross household income for the last 30 days:

• Weekly, Bi-monthly or monthly check stubs

• 2017 Social Security Benefits Award Letter

• UI (Unemployment Insurance) benefits printout and a current job search

4. Eviction Notice from the landlord/magistrate’s office, Rental Assistance Affidavit, IRS W9 Form (for new landlords)

5. Lease Agreement (must include names of all household members)

6. A receipt or money order for the amount CCA cannot pay.

Care In Our Community

A Caregiver Support Group at Heartland Health Care Center — Union will meet every third Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m in the Assisted Living Unit.

This group is open to anyone providing care for a person with health issues or age-related illness. At our caregiver meetings you will meet others in your same situation and learn new ideas to overcome challenges or find answers to questions you may have.

Refreshments will be provided.

Heartland Health Care Center — Union is located at 709 Rice Avenue, Union.

Crochet Club

Clemson Extension FCL (Family and Community Leaders) have formed a Crochet Club that will meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m.-noon.

This club is open to anyone from the beginner to very experienced. There will be an instructor on site at least once a month. Other experienced crochet workers will be available to help at other times.

Civitans Meet

The Union Civitans Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1-2 p.m. at the Inn at Merridun. Lunch is served.DSN Board Meetings

The Union County Disabilities and Special Needs Board will meet at the following times in 2017:

Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 12 p.m.

All meetings will be held at 226 S. Gadberry Street, Union, SC 29379, in the conference room.

Lunch will be provided.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

The Alzheimer’s Support Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at Grace United Methodist Church at 5:30 p.m.

Medi Home Hospice is sponsoring a Bereavement Program. Anyone who has lost a loved one and needs guidance with their loss is invited to attend.

2017 Union County School Board Meeting Dates

These are the 2017 Union County School Board of Trustees meeting dates. All meetings will be held at 6 p.m.

• November 27, 2017 — Jonesville Elementary Middle School

• December 11, 2017 — Union County Career and Technology Center

Additional meetings can be scheduled if needed.

The public and media will be notified if location or times change 24 hours prior to meetings.

2017 Union County Council Meeting Dates

These are the 2017 Union County Council meeting dates. All meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. The meetings will be held in the Grand Jury Room of the Union County Courthouse unless otherwise noted.
