UNION — While the month of November typically brings thoughts of Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday season, South Carolinians know it also brings a much more important event — the annual Battle of the Palmetto State between Clemson and South Carolina.

The Union County Clemson Club will once again kick off the week with its annual Chicken Roast on Monday, November 20. The Chicken Roast, now in its 14th year, will be held at Veteran’s Memorial Park, with doors opening at 5 p.m., dinner served by Park Lane Seafood at 6 p.m., and the speaker and activities taking place at 7 p.m.

Tickets, which will be limited exclusively to members only and are not transferable, will be $17 for those twelve and older, $10 for children between the ages of five and eleven, and free for guests four years old and younger.

Vance Hammond

This year’s speaker for the Chicken Roast will be former Clemson defensive linemen Vance Hammond. Hammond, a graduate of Dorman High School, played defensive line for Clemson from 1987-1990, being an All-ACC pick in 1988 and 1989 and serving as a team captain in 1990. Hammond was drafted in the fifth round by the Phoenix Cardinals and spent several playing professional football. He now serves as Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club in Cherokee County.

Special Auction

The 2017 Chicken Roast will once again feature an auction and raffle for exciting Clemson memorabilia and prizes. A special auction will also be held this year, with proceeds from the auction going to the family of 13 year old Ruthie Dean, who suffers from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer beginning in the brain. Tiger fans attending the event are encouraged to open both their checkbooks and their hearts for a worthy cause.

Tickets for the event can be purchased from members of the Clemson Club, including Hazel McKinney (426-3650), Kathy Stepp (426-0609), Charlie Kelly (426-0899), Rozelle Bramlett (429-6256), or Virgil Childers (251-0094). Ticket sellers will also have club membership applications for those who have not renewed their membership and for those interested in joining
