MONARCH — When most people think of education they tend to think of subjects such as English, Science, Mathematics, and History and while these subjects are key to the intellectual development of young minds there is another subject that is also an indispensable part of the educational process: The Arts.

The Arts have been defined as “the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance.”

It’s that second form of creative activity, music, that some students at Monarch Elementary School have mastered to the point where they will soon be performing, not only in the class, but at special events in and around Union County.

In a statement released last week Monarch Elementary School and Music Teach Katherine Thrift-Winch announced the names of the MES students selected as members of the 2017-2018 Fine Arts Chorus. The press release states that as members of the Fine Arts Chorus, the students “will perform at the Pacolet Indian Summer Festival, PTO programs, and on other special occasions and events at their school and within the county.”

The press release concludes by offering “congratulations to the these shining stars” and the rest of us should join in congratulating them as well, because young people should always be encouraged to make The Arts part of their education. The Arts, and the creativity they inspire, are just as important to the educational and intellectual development of young minds as the subjects of English, Science, Mathematics, and History and to the community those young minds will one day be responsible for and contribute to.

The study of art, whether it is Music, Painting, Literature or Dance, inspires the creativity of those who study it and helps them come to appreciates how that creativity and the arts that inspired it can make them better students with more fully developed and well-rounded minds. They can in turn use that creativity in the classroom and beyond, to improve their performance in school and make greater contributions to society, making the world around them a better place to live for everyone.

So congratulations to these talented young people, may their love of music in particular and the arts in general continue to blossom and inspire them to ever greater success in the classroom and in life.
