UNION COUNTY — A bye week could not have come at a more perfect time for the Union County High School Yellow Jackets. The Jackets have been very banged up for a good portion of the year, including losing starting quarterback Kesean Glover to an ankle injury for the last few games. Going into the Jackets second region game on Friday night they will be as healthy as they have been in quite a while.

“We are finally healthy,” said Union County Head Football Coach Bradley Adams. “Only guys that will be out this week are the guys who had surgery, everyone else is finally back.”

The Jackets have missed the play of Glover the last few games. Having Glover in the backfield provides the Jackets with a dual threat under center. His ability to make plays with his feet and his arm, will help the Jackets as they dive deeper into region play.

This week the Jackets will face region opponent Blue Ridge for homecoming. The Blue Ridge Tigers are 3-4 overall and are 1-0 in region play coming off a 32-20 win over region foe Travelers Rest.

The Tigers have a good offense. Their quarterback has a good arm and is also able to extend plays with his feet, to give receivers time to get open downfield. They do a good job with play selection to keep defenses off balance. They like to throw it around a lot. They can go deep down field, or throw screens, or pick you apart with medium passes. Their defense is very aggressive and very physical.

The Jacket defense will have to be on their toes on Friday night, and the secondary is going to be tested. The defensive line and linebackers will also have to work hard to contain the quarterback in the pocket and not allow him to extend plays by running around. The best way to keep a good offense off the field is to run the football.

The Jackets really need this win on Friday. Starting the region schedule 0-2 will put the Jackets behind the eight ball toward making the playoffs. A win here would take a lot of pressure off of both the players and coaches and will help them relax and play more loose in the coming region games.

I look for Union County to get their first win of the year this week over the Blue Ridge Tigers.
