The fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and McDonald’s will donate a percentage of the sales made during that time to the Dean family to help with their daughter’s medical bills.

McDonald’s of Union is holding a fundraiser today (Saturday) for Ruthie “Ru” Dean who recently underwent surgery to have a tumor removed from her brain.

The event will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and McDonald’s will donate a percentage of all sales during that time to help the Dean family with Ru’s medical bills.

Watercolor Workshop — Registration is now open for a Watercolor Workshop that will be held Saturday, November 4 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $50 per members and $60 for non-members. Call the Union County Arts Council to register.

‘Food For Life’ Instruction

Piedmont Physic Garden welcomes “Food for Life” Instructor Terri Edwards on Saturday, October 14 from 10 a.m.-noon to lead a workshop on plant-based nutrition. Her mission is to guide those with chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer back to wellness. She will also discuss how how she overcame her own health struggles through basic changes in her diet.

The workshop will be held at 301 E. South Street in Union, SC. The cost is $20 for non-members. Littlejohn Family Reunion

The descendants of Walton Stafford and Leila Griffin Littlejohn will hold a Family Reunion in the Christian Fellowship Center at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church on Saturday, Oct. 14 beginning at noon.

Come learn about your ancestors, visit with family and friends, and enjoy some singing and entertainment.

Drive-Thru For Ru Chicken Stew

Union Civitan Club and Junior Civitan Club members will be having a “Drive-Thru for Ru with Tommy Sinclair’s Chicken Stew” fundraiser to help with Ruthie Dean’s medical expenses.

The stew will be ready Saturday, Oct. 14 from 12-4 p.m. at Foster Park.

Purchase advance tickets from any member of the clubs or at the Union Times office, YMCA with William Sprouse or Debbie Foster at the Union County Courthouse.

The Union County Republican Party will meet Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the USC Union Central Building.

CCA Energy Assistance

The Union County Office of Carolina Community Actions, Inc. (CCA) is currently taking applications to assist low-income families with home energy cooling bills and a variety of other programs and services.

Households may be assisted with home energy bills up to $1,000, HVAC unit repairs or replacements, air conditioner units. Other programs and services include rental assistance, General Education Degrees (GED), tuition for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), job training, child care, medical prescriptions, nutrition education and food vouchers.

Applications are taken Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 201 E. Main Street, Suite A, Union, SC. Family households must be income eligible and provide documentation to qualify. For more information, please call the Union County Community Actions office at 864-427-0336.

CCA is a private non-profit corporation whose mission is to promote self-reliance of low-income individual and families by forming partnerships which will provide a systematic reduction of the causes and conditions of poverty.

Documentation

CCA can provide Non-Emergency Assistance; Emergency Assistance; and Mortgage, Rent, Water Assistance to qualified low-income families. The following documents are required to obtain these types of assistance:

Non-Emergency Assistance

Non-Emergency Assistance is provided where there is no past due bill.

1. South Carolina picture ID with current address

2. Social Security cards for all household members

3. Proof of total gross household income for the last 30 days:

• Weekly, bi-monthly or monthly check stubs

• 2017 Social Security Benefits Award Letter

• UI (Unemployment Insurance) benefits printout and a current job search

4. Copy of the current unpaid energy bill (must be in the name of the applicant or a household member)

Emergency Assistance

Emergencies include bills that are within 5 days of disconnect, decrease in income, extreme weather conditions, and other unforeseen incidents.

1. South Carolina picture ID with current address

2. Social Security cards for all household members

3. Proof of total gross household income for the last 30 days:

• Weekly, Bi-monthly or monthly check stubs

• 2017 Social Security Benefits Award Letter

• UI (Unemployment Insurance) benefits printout and a current job search

4. Last 3 (three) energy bills from utility vendor (a current stamped-account history printout

may be required for various vendors)

5. A receipt indicating disallowed fees on the energy bill are paid i.e. outdoor lights, round up fees, etc.)

Mortgage, Rent, Water Assistance

1. South Carolina picture ID with current address

2. Social Security cards for all household members

3. Proof of total gross household income for the last 30 days:

• Weekly, Bi-monthly or monthly check stubs

• 2017 Social Security Benefits Award Letter

• UI (Unemployment Insurance) benefits printout and a current job search

4. Eviction Notice from the landlord/magistrate’s office, Rental Assistance Affidavit, IRS W9 Form (for new landlords)

5. Lease Agreement (must include names of all household members)

6. A receipt or money order for the amount CCA cannot pay.

Care In Our Community

A Caregiver Support Group at Heartland Health Care Center — Union will meet every third Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m in the Assisted Living Unit.

This group is open to anyone providing care for a person with health issues or age-related illness. At our caregiver meetings you will meet others in your same situation and learn new ideas to overcome challenges or find answers to questions you may have.

Refreshments will be provided.

Crochet Club

Clemson Extension FCL (Family and Community Leaders) have formed a Crochet Club that will meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m.-noon.

This club is open to anyone from the beginner to very experienced. There will be an instructor on site at least once a month. Other experienced crochet workers will be available to help at other times.

Head Start Accepting Applications

Carolina Community Actions, Inc., Head Start is now accepting applications for children ages 3 and 4 for the 2017-2018 program year.

Head Start serves children from low-income families and children with disabilities. Children with disabilities, including emotional, intellectual and physical (visual, hearing, speech, crippling and other chronic impairments), are eligible regardless of their family income level. Services provided by Head Start include education, nutrition, medical, dental, social services, transportation, parent involvement, and special education services.

We are also now accepting applications for Infants and Toddlers birth to 3 years of age and pregnant mothers for the 2017-2018 program year. Early Head Start Programs begin serving children before they are born by offering services to their pregnant moms. The purpose of this is to ensure that the pregnant woman remains healthy throughout her pregnancy.

CCA Early Head Start/Head Start participates in the USDA Child Care Food Program and breakfast and lunch are served to the Head Start children and formula, breakfast, and lunch are served to the Early Head Start children at no cost to the families. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

A legal birth certificate, certificate of immunization, proof of income for the 2016 calendar year, and social security numbers of all persons in household must be provided when you apply.

These are the 2017 Union County School Board of Trustees meeting dates. All meetings will be held at 6 p.m.

Additional meetings can be scheduled if needed.
