UNION — Serving customers throughout South Carolina for nearly 85 years, Arthur State Bank continues to operate as one of the state’s oldest family-owned and operated community banks with the addition of a fourth generation member of the founding family.
Following in the footsteps of her father, Ashleigh Oxner — daughter of Carlisle Oxner, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of Arthur State Bank — joined Arthur State Bank in Union, South Carolina as a teller in training on September 1, 2017. Her father started his journey to become a third generation leader of the family bank on the exact same teller line on September 1, 1987, 30 years ago to the day. In fact, Ashleigh is being supervised by the same employees who trained her father many years ago. Rooted in tradition and commitment to the community, it is that kind of employee loyalty at Arthur State Bank which fosters a family atmosphere amongst its dedicated employees.
Only a handful of banks have withstood the course of time and are still owned and operated by the original founding families. Arthur State Bank was founded in 1933 by Major General Harry M. Arthur. His mission was to fill the gap, and provide much-needed financial services for the people of Union County so they could prosper and benefit the growth of the county. For more than 50 years “The General” led the bank under humanitarian principals and set the standard of the mindset that “the customer is not an interruption in our work, but the reason for it.” When he passed away in 1988, the reins were passed down to his son-in-law, J. Carlisle Oxner, Jr., who was an attorney in Columbia, South Carolina at the time. He took over as Chairman and President of Arthur State Bank, Carolina State Bank and Woodruff State Bank — which later combined as one institution under the Arthur State Bank name.
Today, the bank is led by The General’s grandson, J. Carlisle Oxner, III, who is pleased to welcome his daughter as the fourth generation family member. Before joining the bank, Ashleigh received a bachelor’s degree from Clemson University in 2014. Upon graduation, she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked with various political organizations. After three years, she made the move back to South Carolina to join the family legacy. As she begins her career in banking, Ashleigh will serve many roles within the company to gain industry experience and expertise.
From an early age, Ashleigh would often times go to work with her father.
“I’ve been coming to the bank for as long as I can remember,” said Ashleigh. “I’m honored to be a part of Arthur State Bank and am excited to contribute to something that is so important to the community and to my family.”
Ashleigh understands and appreciates the importance of the unmatched customer care that the Arthur State Bank family has continually provided to the people and businesses it serves. Ashleigh hopes to serve the community with the same unwavering passion and personalized care that her father, grandfather and great grandfather have done for the past 85 years.
“At Arthur State Bank, we value tradition and stay true to our word,” added Carlisle Oxner. “It is important to us to ensure our customers that we are here for them, and will continue to invest in our communities as a family owned independent bank.”
