UNION COUNTY — The Yellow Jackets fell to 0-5 on the season this past Friday night with a 38-0 loss to the Ridge View Blazers.
The Union County offense was not able to get anything going offensively against the Blazers as the Jackets netted less than 100 yards of total offense. The Jackets had only 62 net rushing yards and 29 net passing yards in the game. The Yellow Jacket offense completed nine passes to Yellow Jacket receivers and three passes to Ridge View defenders. Running back Deshaun Holmes led the way rushing for the Jackets. Quarterback Will Horlacher was eight for eighteen passing with two interceptions.
Union County’s defense allowed Ridge View 333 yards total on offense, 141 on the ground and 192 yards through the air.
This week the Yellow Jackets will be at home for Hall of Fame night taking on defending 5A Upper State Champion Boiling Springs. The Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season with wins over Ashley Ridge, Laurens, and Rock Hill. The Bulldogs lone loss on the season was a 29-20 loss in week two to a very good TL Hanna team.
Last year’s Boiling Springs’ team was really good. In fact they were the best team in school history. They won what many people think is the toughest region in high school football, Region 3 5A. They also advanced to the State Title game for the first time in school history, coming up a bit short against Dutch Fork. This is a different team. That team was dominant. The Bulldogs lost sixteen starters from last year’s team. That’s a lot.
One starter from last year’s team that did return for the Bulldogs is Najee Thompson. That’s a name Jacket fans will need to know heading into this week because they will probably hear it a lot Friday night. A couple of weeks ago against Rock Hill, Thompson had 5 catches on offense for 134 yards and a touchdown while also intercepting a pass on defense and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown.
Another name to listen for is the Bulldogs’ cornerback Storm Duck. One reason to watch out for him is he’s a force on the defensive side of the football, and the other is his name is fantastic.
This Boiling Springs team has a ton of team speed that will give the Jackets some trouble. However, they aren’t as big across the front as a lot of teams the Jackets have seen so far, which will hopefully open some running lanes for the Jackets.
