UNION — It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words but an exhibit of the works of several members of a group of local artists proves that “A Painting Is Worth 1,000 Words” as well.

Each Tuesday, a group of local artists known as the “Tuesday Morning Painting With Coffee Group” meet at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery on Main Street in downtown Union. During the meetings, which begin at 10 a.m., the members of the group paint using mediums such as acrylic, watercolors, and painted paper collage while socializing and, of course, having coffee. The group is open to persons interested in painting whether they are beginners or have been painting all their lives.

Currently, the art of some of the members of the group is on display at the UCAC Art Gallery as part of an exhibit called “A Painting Is Worth 1,000 Words.”

UCAC Director Amber Ivey said that each painting on display “is centered around a word or a phrase” and that the paintings range from some that “have deep meaning to the artist” to others that are “carefree and comical.”

Ivey said the members of the Painting With Coffee Group who contributed works to the exhibit are Betsy Skipper, Bennie Giles, Nanette Jenkins, Angie Locke, Marilyn Bright, and Bill Walter.

On Tuesday, August 29, from 10:30 a.m.-noon, the UCAC will host a reception for the artists giving the public not only the opportunity to view their work, but also to meet and talk with them about their art while doing so. Refreshments will be served during the reception.

The A Painting Is Worth 1,000 Words exhibit continues through Friday, September 15.

For more information about the exhibit and the reception contact Union County Arts Council Director Amber Ivey at 864-429-2817.
