BUFFALO — Four people were injured after being sprayed with acid during an accident this morning at the ESAB Welding & Cutting Systems plant.

Union County Emergency Management Director Rob Fraim said that the accident occurred around 9:30 a.m.

“They were doing preventive maintenance on one of the machines and a pipe got a pinhole leak in it and it sprayed sulphuric acid on four people,” Fraim said.

Of the four people injured in the accident, Fraim said one had to be airlifted for special treatment because of the nature of his injuries while the others were treated locally.

“One was flown to Augusta Burns Center because he got it in his eyes,” Fraim said. “The other three were deconned (decontaminated) at Union Medical Center.”

Fraim said he had no further information on the condition of the individuals injured in the accident.

In addition to Union County Emergency Management, Fraim said the Union County EMS and the Buffalo Fire Department also responded to the scene. He said they were on the scene for 20-25 minutes.

As for the situation at the ESAB plant, Fraim said plant personnel cut off the pipe that leaked and the spill was contained in a containment pit. He said he’d been told by plant officials that their maintenance personnel were going to replace the pipe and that they expected the work to be done sometime today.
