UNION COUNTY — It’s now August and that means the final days of the summer break are counting down to the first day of the new school year and that’s means it’s time for mom and dad to go shopping for the school supplies their children will need for school.

Today (Wednesday) is the second day of registration for students at Union County High School. Tuesday the seniors and juniors were registered and today it’s the turn of the sophomores and freshmen.

The elementary and middle schools will not be far behind with registration taking place at Buffalo Elementary School, Foster Park Elementary School, Monarch Elementary School, Jonesville Elementary/Middle School, Lockhart Elementary School, and Sims Middle School on Monday, Aug. 14 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m.

The first day of school for students in the 1st through the 12th grades will be Thursday, Aug. 17 while the first day for 5K students will be Tuesday, Aug. 22 and for 4K students Monday, Aug. 28.

To be ready for the first day of school, students will need school a variety of school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, packs of paper, etc. To help families know what their children will need, the elementary and middle schools have issue student school supply lists for each each grade, especially the elementary grades. Those lists are attached to this story along with the Union County School District Calendar for 2017-2018.

As those lists show, there’s a lot of things students will need for school, and buying all those things that can get a little expensive, but fortunately this weekend (Friday, Aug. 4-Sunday, Aug.6) is “Tax Free Weekend” which can help families stock up on school supplies at a reduced cost.

According to the SC Department of Revenue website (https://dor.sc.gov/) “during the annual Sales Tax Holiday, a variety of approved school supply items are exempt from the 6% state sales tax and any applicable local taxes. In years past, shoppers have saved between $2 million and $3 million during the holiday weekend.”

The website further states that “shoppers will pay no sales tax on items ranging from clothing and shoes to book bags and computers. Items such as jewelry, cosmetics, eye wear, furniture, and layaway purchases are not exempt.”

The website also features lists of what items are exempt and are not exempt in the categories of clothing and accessories, school supplies and technology, dorm and home.

So take advantage of the list of school supplies provided by our local schools, the information provided by the SC Department of Revenue, and, above all, take advantage of the Sales Tax Holiday to make sure your children are ready for the first day of school and the school days that follow.
