UNION COUNTY — Good sportsmanship is an expression of good character and the Union County Dixie Girls SweeTees Team recently demonstrated their good character through a show of good sportsmanship by helping raise money for the team that defeated them for the Dixie Girls State Championship.

The Dixie Girls State Tournament was held earlier this month and three teams from Union County took part in the competition. One of those was was the 6U SweeTees who were eliminated from the tournament by the Boiling Springs team which went on to win the State Championship and with it the opportunity to represent South Carolina in the Dixie Girls World Series which will be be held in Alexandria, Louisiana.

While they didn’t win the State Championship, the Union County SweeTees won the Sportsmanship Award. The team received the award in recognition of the positive attitudes of its players and coaches and the prayer said after the game by Coach Jason Ivey. The SweeTees demonstrated what good sports they are by posing for a picture with the Boiling Springs team that had ended their bid for this year’s State Championship.

The team once again demonstrated the good sportsmanship they were honored for when they agreed to take part in a fundraiser to help raise money for the Boiling Springs team to go to the World Series. The fundraiser was held last Saturday in Chesnee and the main event was a scrimmage-like game between the Boiling Springs and Union County teams. As they did at the State Tournament, the teams once again posed together for a picture.

Dixie Girls League Secretary Kristy Garner said Friday that the fundraiser raised $1,800 for the Boiling Springs team’s trip to the World Series.

Good sportsmanship is a product of good character and by doing what they can to help the team that defeated them the Union County SweeTees have shown they are not only good sports but that they also have the good character that is the mark of a good person. Union County is fortunate to have young ladies of such good character. They are an example and inspiration to us all.
