UNION — Most of the time when we think of art being exhibited in a museum we think of colorful images produced with paint and a brush or a colorful scene captured with a camera, but an exhibit now on display at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery shows that art can be in black and white as well.

“Black and White Abstract & Landscape” is the name of the exhibit of the work of Fine Art Photographer Will Barnes. The exhibit, which runs through July 28, showcases Barnes’ work in the medium of black and white photography. The works on display include a series of photographs of the Saluda River and a series on the Congaree River as well as photographs of more abstract imagery with titles such as “Rochester NY” and “Rion SC #11.”

While most of the work on display is in black and white, the exhibit also includes some color work by Barnes such as “Glass and Color #1.”

A biography released by the UCAC about Barnes states that he was born St. Johant, Austria, and spent much of his childhood in Europe. It states that his interest in photography lead to Barnes returning to the University of South Carolina to earn a Master’s Degree in Media Arts specializing in Still Photography and Multi Image Production.

The press release states that after working as a commercial photographer, Barnes realized his passion was for Fine Art Photography. This lead him back to school where he earned a Master of Fine Art degree in Photography. After returning to Columbia, the press release states Barnes began teaching photography at USC as an adjunct professor and building a commercial photography business all while pursuing his love of Fine Art photography. It states that Barnes’ work has been shown in more than 100 exhibitions both locally and nationally.

In addition to the photographs hanging on the walls of the art gallery, the exhibit also feature copies of “Abstractions” and “Saluda River,” two collections of Barnes’ work. The books and the photographs on display are all available for sale.

The press release concludes by stating that the public is invited to “visit the exhibit and see photography in a different form.”
