UNION — Union Post 22 kicked off the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday night as they took on Spartanburg Post 28 at Timken Sports Complex.

A pregame ceremony featuring former Union Legion players started the festivities. Union Post 22 Commander Tommy Sinclair welcomed the crowd to game and made some brief remarks about the history and the direction of Post 22 baseball in Union. Sinclair also asked the folks in attendance to join him for a moment of silence in honor of Memorial Day.

Joe Haney, a former Post 22 player and Army Veteran, offered the invocation. Jantzen Childers, a decorated Vietnam Veteran, sang the National Anthem, and Kevin Brewington, another former Union Legion Player and Army Veteran, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Post 28 scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early three to nothing lead. The Spartanburg area team added another run in the top of the second inning to make it four to nothing. Post 22 got on the board in the bottom of the second thanks to an extra base hit by Debo Woods, who eventually came around to score the lone run of the game for the Union team.

Post 22 pitchers struggled to find the strike zone all night long and hit numerous Post 28 batters in route to the 16-0 loss on Wednesday. Post 22 will be off this coming week due and will return to action on June 13th at the Timken Complex against Gaffney.
