UNION COUNTY — Four Union County High School student-athletes were presented with a total of $2,000 in scholarships this week.

In a ceremony Wednesday morning at the CATE Center, Booster Club President Jerry Williams and Booster Club Treasurer Roger Bailey presented Chase Vinson and Brooke Smith with checks for $500 each.

Williams said the Booster Club Scholarships have been awarded by the club since it was founded in the 1950s. He said recipients are one male and one female student-athletes with the highest record of academic achievements for the school year.

Vinson plays baseball for UCHS while Smith plays basketball.

The ceremony also included Williams and Booster Club member Sandra P. Moss presenting A.J. Hunter and Ashley Vinson with checks for $500 each as well.

Williams said that these were Bob Dunlap Scholarships which are named for Union High School Coach Bob Dunlap who he said began the school’s tradition of winning on the field. He said the scholarships are awarded to one male and one female student-athletes based not only on athletic and academic achievement but also how they present themselves on the field, in school, and in the community.

Hunter plays football and baseball for UCHS while Vinson plays softball.
