UNION COUNTY — The Union County High School Football schedule for 2017 was released on Wednesday. The schedule includes six non-region games and four region contests.
The 2017 season, which is the second season for the Jackets in class 4A and the second under Head Coach Bradley Adams, begins on the road as they travel to Inman to take on the defending Class 3A State Champion Chapman Panthers on Aug. 18. Union defeated Chapman last year at home before the Panthers started a winning streak that eventually lead to them defeating Dillon in the Class 3A Championship Game. The Panthers return the majority of their starters and should be especially strong on offense.
The Highway 18 rivalry will be renewed in the Jackets’ second game of the season on Aug. 25. The Jackets will travel up to Gaffney to take on the Indians at the New Reservation. Last season Gaffney defeated Union County 53-7 behind the play of their very young Quarterback Tyshun Sarratt. The bad news for every team that plays Gaffney this year is that Sarratt returns at the helm for the Indians this year. He improved every week last year and so did the Indians who snuck in the playoffs, but ended up making it all the way to the third round before being eliminated. Gaffney should be a force in Class 5A this year.
The Jackets’ first home game will come in their third game of the season (Sept. 1) as they take on York at Union County Stadium. Union County defeated York last year 23-13 also in the 3rd game of the season. Following the match up with York, the Jackets will be at home again the following week taking on the Spartanburg Vikings. The Vikings made the Upper State Championship last year, but they have a lot of unanswered questions coming into this season especially on offense, where several players graduated including Quarterback William Yex.
The final two non-region games for Union County will be at Ridgeview on Sept. 15 and at home versus Boiling Springs on Sept. 22. Ridgeview beat Union County twice last year, once in the regular season and then again to end the Jackets’ season in the playoffs. Boiling Springs is coming off the most successful season in school history, which saw the Bulldogs claim the region title and make their very first appearance in the State Title Game, where they came up a bit short.
The Jackets’ region schedule will kick off on Sept. 29 on the road at Eastside, as Union County will look to repeat as region champions. The Jackets will then get a week off before returning home on Oct. 13 to play Blue Ridge. The annual Jacket Bowl between Union County and Greer will take place on Oct. 20 at Dooley Field in Greer, and the Jackets will conclude the regular season on Oct. 28 at home against Travelers Rest.
