UNION — The University of South Carolina Union held Commencement Exercises on Saturday, April 29 in the USC Union Auditorium.

The commencement speaker was Union native and 1977 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Bobby D. Gist. Mr. Gist recently retired from the position of executive assistant to the president for Equal Opportunity Programs and Title IX coordinator at USC, a position he had held since January 1995. Committed to his community, Mr. Gist is involved with several local, state and national civic and professional organizations. He is chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Columbia Housing Authority, a member and past chair of the South Carolina Professional Association for Access and Equity, and past chair of the South Carolina Association of Minorities in Public Administration.

Recipient of the Commencement Speaker Award was presented to Katie Wingo-Self by University of South Carolina President Dr. Harris Pastides. The USC Union Scholarship Committee selects the student based on outstanding academic achievement.

Julia Keppel was presented the Kennedy Recognition Award by Col. Richard Denton, Chairman of the Union/Laurens Commission for Higher Education. The Kennedy Award is awarded to the individual with highest cumulative grade point average at the end of the fall semester proceeding May graduation.

Also recognized was Dr. Majdouline “Maggie” Aziz as USC Union Teacher of the Year.
