UNION COUNTY — April ended on a high note for local racer Earl Petty who won his first race of the season.
Petty, 19, the son of Mike and Kim Petty, beat 12 other drivers on Saturday, April 29 at the Cherokee Motor Speedway to score his win of the season in the Renegade Division.
The win was the most recent achievement as a racer for Petty who, in 2016, finished the year with a standing of 1540, just 16 points behind the 1556 of veteran Hall of Fame driver Mitchell Duvall. Petty’s performance was recognized at the Cherokee Motor Speedway’s 2016 Championship Banquet held Friday, Jan. 27 during which he and Buddy Cudd were presented with the Second Place Trophy.
Petty drives the No. 5 Monte Carlo car he and his father built. He is sponsored by Broad River Materials, Inc., The Tire Shop of Jonesville, Bailey’s Grill in Lockhart, Carter’s Auto Sales, Denton Gas Company, Inc., Mitchell Graphics, Mulls Starter and Alternator and Upstate Auto Auction in Spartanburg.
