UNION COUNTY — Courage off the field in a life and death situation was honored by the Union County Dixie Girls Softball League this past Saturday.

Dixie Girls held opening day ceremonies for the 2017 softball season at Timken Sports Complex Saturday morning. With all the teams assembled around the baseball diamond, Dixie Girls Softball Secretary Kristy Garner announced that the league was honoring Janiya McLeod, not for her prowess on the field, but for her courage in the face of a potentially deadly situation and her decision to put others ahead of herself.

“The characteristics of a hero include strength, intelligence, courage, and selflessness,” Garner said. “A hero will strive to accomplish the toughest goals no matter the obstacles. Heroism is to not be concerned with self-recognition. In a time of need, a true hero will push aside any fears and gather the strength to do what it takes to protect others. A quote from Hercules says, ‘A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.’

“I am proud to say that one of our players demonstrated an incredible act of bravery and we would like to honor her,” she said. “Janiya McLeod woke up in the middle of the night and realized that her house was on fire. She made sure that her sisters were out of the house and her brother was safe before she got out of the burning house.”

As part of the league’s public recognition of Janiya’s act of heroism, Garner said that “Union County Dixie Girls and an anonymous provider would like to present her with all new softball equipment for her heroic actions.”

Janiya plays left field for Wix Locksmith, and Garner said Monday that the team, lead by Coach Nikki Young, also honored her courage by holding a fundraiser to raise funds to purchase new school clothes for her.
