UNION — The young artists whose work currently hangs on the walls of the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery in downtown Union were honored with a reception Thursday evening attended by more than 150 family members, friends, and art lovers.

The Art Gallery is currently playing host to the 2017 Youth Art Show which displays works of art produced by 5K-5th grade students at Buffalo Elementary, Foster Park Elementary, Monarch Elementary, Jonesville Elementary/Middle, Lockhart Elementary/Middle, and Union Christian Day schools. Students at those schools working in a variety of mediums including acrylic, pastels, collage, 3-5, and recycled produced works of art which they submitted to their schools’ art teachers. The teachers in turn selected which of those works of art would be submitted to the UCAC for display in the 2017 Youth Art Show.

Approximately 70 works were selected and are now on display at the show which began Wednesday, March 2 and runs through Tuesday, March 28. It was those works of art that were on display during a reception held Thursday at the Art Gallery for the young artists that produced them.

UCAC Director Amber Ivey said Friday that the reception drew a crowd of a little more than 150 people who enjoyed the light refreshments served, the works of art on display, and meeting and socializing with the young artists and their families.

During the reception, Ivey and UCAC Board President Caroline Barger announced the names of all the young artists involved in the show and handed out certificates recognizing them for their participation. They also announced the winning artists for each category of the show.

The award categories were 5K and first grade, second and third grades, and fourth and fifth grades. Each category had first, second, and third place winners and an honorable mention.

The first, second, and third place winners in each category received a cash prize of $20, $15, and $10 respectively. The honorable mentions in each category received art supplies. There was also an Overall Prize of $25.

The cash prizes were sponsored by Gestamp while the honorable mention prizes were provided by the UCAC.
