Youth Art Show Reception Thursday

It is one of the approximately 70 works of art by elementary school students currently on display at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery as part of the 2017 Youth Art Show. A reception for Brittany and her fellow artists will be held at the Art Gallery on Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

UNION — Among the many educational tasks they perform schools nurture the imagination, creativity, and talent of children and some of the results of those nurturing efforts are now on display at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery.

The Art Gallery is currently playing host to the 2017 Youth Art Show which displays works of art produced by 5K-5th grade students at Buffalo Elementary, Foster Park Elementary, Monarch Elementary, Jonesville Elementary/Middle, Lockhart Elementary/Middle, and Union Christian Day schools.

“Students present works to their art teachers who the select the works that will be shown in the gallery,” UCAC Director Amber Ivey said Thursday. “The students work in a variety of mediums including acrylic, pastels, collage, 3-5, and recycled. This year we have approximately 70 works on display.”

The show began March 2 and will continue through March 28. A public reception will be held for the young artists at the gallery on Thursday, March 23 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and awards presented.

“Our awards categories are 5K and first grade, second and third grades, and fourth and fifth grades,” Ivey said. “There will be first, second, and third place winners and an honorable mention in each category.”

Ivey said that the first, second, and third place winners in each category will receive a cash prize of $20, $15, and $10 respectively. The honorable mentions in each category will receive art supplies. There will also be an Overall Prize of $25.

The cash prizes are sponsored by Gestamp while the honorable mention prizes are provided by the UCAC.

A second Youth Art Show will be held for 6th-12th grade students in April.

March At The UCAC

In addition to the Youth Show and reception, the following events and activities are also being held this month at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery on Main Street in downtown Union.

• Painting with Coffee — Whether you are a beginner, or a lifelong artists join us every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.

• Monday Night Music — Looking for something new to do? Join us March 20 at 6:30 p.m. for a night full of local, musical talent.

• Toddler Time — Friday, March 24 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 12:30-1:30 p.m. will be all about the little ones! Any child 4 years old or younger is invited to join us. $10.

• Mini Monet — Join us on Saturday, March 18 for a morning full of secret creativity! We will be making secret book safes! Kindergarten-5th Grade. $15 members/ $20 nonmembers.
