The quarterly meeting of the Union County Historical Society will convene on Sunday, March 19 at 3 p.m. in the Union County Museum meeting room. Attendees may enter through the Main Street Door or the basement door. Guest speaker will be Mr. Frank Hart, Union County Supervisor. Members are urged to attend and visitors are always welcome.
Come visit the staff of Buffalo Elementary School on Tuesday, March 21 from 5-8 p.m. at the Union County McDonald’s on the North Duncan Bypass to help raise funds for our school. During these hours McDondald’s will be giving a percentage of its sales to our school.

Republican Women’s Club
A meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, in the Community Room at USC Union located in the Central Building, second floor, 309 E. Academy Street, Union.
The purpose of the meeting is to organize a Union County Republican Women’s Club.
The speaker will be Beverly Owensby, President of the Palmetto House Republican Women in Spartanburg. Beverly also serves as 1st Vice President of the South Carolina Federation Republican Women and National Federation Republican Women Membership Committee & Newsletter Editor. She is well versed in what is going on in our country and recently returned from attending the inauguration in Washington.
The public is invited to the meeting, however, only women are eligible for full membership while men are welcome as associate members.

Sims Class Of 1969
The Sims High School Class of 1969’s regular meeting will be held Thursday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 22 Headquarters.
All are invited to a book signing at the Union County Museum on Friday, March 24 from 5-7 p.m.. Everyone who worked on the Obituary book is being issued an invitation to be present. If you’ve already purchased this interesting book bring it back and as many of those who worked on Obits and Death Notices and are present will be glad to autograph your copy.
You might be interested in some other books such as Dr. Allan Charles’ “The Narrative History of Union County,” “BUC-Busted until Christmas,” “Where Have You Gone Ted Williams,” and only four copies of “Images of America — Union County, South Carolina” are left. This last book will not be reprinted.

Head Start Accepting Applications
Carolina Community Actions, Inc., Head Start is now accepting applications for children ages 3 and 4 for the 2017-2018 program year.
Head Start serves children from low-income families and children with disabilities. Children with disabilities, including emotional, intellectual and physical (visual, hearing, speech, crippling and other chronic impairments), are eligible regardless of their family income level. Services provided by Head Start include education, nutrition, medical, dental, social services, transportation, parent involvement, and special education services.
We are also now accepting applications for Infants and Toddlers birth to 3 years of age and pregnant mothers for the 2017-2018 program year. Early Head Start Programs begin serving children before they are born by offering services to their pregnant moms. The purpose of this is to ensure that the pregnant woman remains healthy throughout her pregnancy.
CCA Early Head Start/Head Start participates in the USDA Child Care Food Program and breakfast and lunch are served to the Head Start children and formula, breakfast, and lunch are served to the Early Head Start children at no cost to the families. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

— To register for 5 year old kindergarten (5K), children will need to be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2017.
In order to register their children, parents must bring the following documentation to registration:

Upcountry Literary Festival
USC Union will be the host to the seventh annual Upcountry Literary Festival this year on Friday, March 24, from 1-5 p.m., and Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The two day-event will showcase a number of nationally and regionally renowned authors, poets, and musical artist.
The Upcountry Literary Festival is honored to announce the keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Kelly Cherry, who will also be presented our William “Singing Billy” Walker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Southern Letters. Dr. Cherry is a poet, novelist, and memoirist whose work includes “Augusta Played,” “The Life and Death of Poetry,” and “Dr. Joyce Brothers and Me,” among many others. Her work is accessible, humorous, and “serious” in that most engaging way. Along with other numerous awards and honors, Dr. Cherry was named Virginia’s Poet Laureate by their Governor Bob McDonnell in 2010 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2016.
The event is free to everyone and will be held in the auditorium at USC Union’s Main Building. A full schedule and participant list will be posted at a later date on the USC Union website.

Teens Sought For Summer Jobs
The USDA Forest Service, Enoree Ranger District is seeking young men and women, ages 15-18, who are interested in summer employment with the USDA Forest Service in the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). Crew members will earn minimum wage (7.25 p/h), working 40 hours per week for eight weeks (June 11-August 5, 2017).
The YCC program teaches young adults about the forest environment by engaging them in the management of its natural resources. Students gain hands-on experience in trail building; campground maintenance and renovation; noxious weed removal and planting projects. These and other projects all serve to benefit the forest and its ecosystems. It’s a great introduction for kids interested in pursuing a natural resources career.
Applicants must be prepared for hard physical work in an outdoor environment under potentially adverse weather conditions and rough terrain. Crew members are responsible for their own daily transportation to the Enoree District Office. Each participant must provide his/her own work boots, proper work clothes, a backpack and a daily lunch. The USDA Forest Service will provide project tools and transportation to and from project work sites each morning.
The district will choose enrollees based upon answers to application questions contained on the form. So be succinct and diligent in answering the questions. An equal number of men and women will be chosen. Applications must be submitted in “hard copy” form to USDA Forest Service, 20 Work Center Road, Whitmire, SC 29178 by April 24, 2017. E-mails will not be accepted.
Interested persons may pick up an application from the guidance counselors at local high schools in Union, Newberry, Chester, Laurens, and Fairfield counties. Clemson Club Membership Drive
The Union County Clemson Club is holding a membership drive and is seeking all Clemson fans who are “All In” to join.
Club membership is open to all Clemson fans, alumni and non-alumni alike.
The Union County Clemson Club annually hosts two major events, a kickoff event in August and a chicken roast in November leading up to the annual football game between Clemson and South Carolina.
Each year, two Union County students who will attend Clemson as freshmen receive a scholarship from the club, allowing them to further their education and join the Clemson family.
Annual club dues are $25 which cover all Tigers in the household, with dues supporting the activities of the club, specifically scholarships.

Relay For Life Schedule
Union County Relay For Life Team Captain meetings are now under way and will continue into spring with the 2017 fundraising campaign culminating in May with this year’s Relay For Life Event.

The event will get under way at 6 p.m. with the Survivor Reception followed by the Opening Ceremonies at 7 p.m. The rest of the evening’s activities will continue through the rest of the evening with the Closing Ceremony held at 1 a.m. Saturday, May 13.
