UNION COUNTY — Even though he was signing to play football Taji Whitener’s first priority in attending Presbyterian College is not to become a gridiron star but to get the education he needs to become a pharmacist.

In a ceremony in Room 600 of the Cate Center Friday morning, Whitener, a senior at Union County High School and member of the UCHS Yellow Jackets football team, signed to play defensive back for the Presbyterian College Blue Hose. The ceremony was attended by Whitener’s family and friends and UCHS Football Coach Bradley Adams who coached Whitener during this, his final year with the Yellow Jackets. Adams praised Whitener and expressed confidence that he will succeed at Presbyterian.

“Taji is a very determined young man who has a plan for his life,” Adams said. “He is going to do whatever it takes to reach his goals.”

After signing to play with the Blue Hose, Whitener put on his Presbyterian College cap and spoke about his reasons for choosing Presbyterian. He said while he is going there to play football, sports is not his main focus, his education is.

“For the most part it was the educational purposes, education comes before football,” Whitener said. “Football is not forever. I want to be a pharmacist, and they have a good pharmacy school.”

Whitener said he was also influenced by a friend who graduated from Presbyterian.

“Growing up I had a a close friend who graduated from Presbyterian College in 2013, Mikey Ruff, who had a great influence,” Whitener said. “Once I learned more about the school and the educational purposes I decided it was for me.”
