UNION COUNTY — Draft Day for the Dixie Youth Ozone League began with 30 children and ended with four teams and the possibility of a fifth.

Saturday was the second of two Draft Days being held by Dixie Youth at the Timken Sports Complex. Draft Day began at 11 a.m. with the children registered for the Dixie Youth Ozone League (ages 11 & 12) on the field tossing baseballs back and forth and practicing batting. As the day wore on the draft got underway as the 30 boys and girls playing on the field were drafted into a total of four teams.

While Saturday was the second and final Draft Day for Dixie Youth this season, Dixie Youth President Tommy Ford said the possibility exists that a fifth Ozone League team will be formed. Ford said that this is because there have been some late sign-ups for the Ozone Leaguge. He said if there are enough late sign-ups a fifth team will be formed.

Ford said that practice for the Ozone League begins today, March 1, and that the lastest a child can be signed up is Saturday. He said that any parent with a child wanting to sign up should go out and talk to the staff a Timken Sports Complex.

The first Draft Day of the 2017 season was on Saturday, Feb. 18 for the Dixie Youth Minor League, and it too was held at the Timken Sports Complex. A total of 88 boys and girls (ages 9 & 10) were drafted into seven Minor League teams at that time.

In addition to the Minor and Ozone leagues, Dixie Youth/Dixie Boys has four other leagues including:

• Tee Ball — ages 3 & 4

• Machine Pitch Juniors — ages 5 & 6

• Machine Pitch Seniors — 7 & 8

• Pony League — ages 13 & 14

Ford said Machine Pitch Senior League players were selected for their teams Saturday by having their names placed in a hat and drawn.

As for Machine Pitch Juniors and Tee Ball leagues, Ford said the children signed up will be divided among the teams as equally as possible based on their ages so that there is an equal number of 5 & 6 year olds and 3 & 4 year olds on the teams in the respective leagues.

Team selections for the Pony League will not be made at the present time because some of those children are playing ball at their schools. The selections for those teams will be made in April.
