JONESVILLE — It’s never too early to see the chiropractor and it’s actually better you receive care by one before you start having pain according to Dr. Kat Sparrow.
Since March 1 of this year, Sparrow Family Chiropractic, 109 Hames Avenue, Jonesville, has been providing chiropractic care to a growing number of patients. It is owned and operated by Dr. Kat Sparrow who said that her goal is to not only care for those needing her help, but to get people to see that chiropractic is not just about relieving back pains, but about the total health and well-being of the person undergoing chiropractic care.
“A lot of people come in for back pains, for aches, but chiropractic is much more than that,” Sparrow, who prefers to be called Dr. Kat, said. “I don’t see myself as a just a back doctor, I’m a nervous system doctor.”
Dr. Kat pointed out that in chiropractic there is a great emphasis on the alignment of the spine. She said this is because of the role the spine plays in the nervous system. When the spine is properly aligned then the nervous system functions properly and this in turn has a powerful impact on the entire body, not just the area the patient was seeking treatment for.
“This allows the entire body to function appropriately,” Dr. Kat said. “There will be people that come in with back pain who will say that even their knees feel better even though I never touched them.”
Dr. Kat said that the proper alignment of the spine and the ensuing appropriate functioning of the nervous system can also have a positive impact in areas people might not expect.
“It’s about so much more than pain relief, it’s strengthening the immune system,” Dr. Kat said. “It can even help people with allergies and sleeping.”
Before becoming a chiropractor, Dr. Kat worked for 12 years in mental health care. She said that her experience there dealing with people facing mental health challenges has given her a deeper understanding of the difference chiropractic can make in people’s lives.
“I think that it allows me to under the value of chiropractic,” Dr. Kat said. “I wish I could have understood the value of chiropractic then because there were many patients who could have used it.”
Dr. Kat said that chiropractic’s ability to positively impact the health, mental as well as physical, of those undergoing it, is because chiropractic is not about aches and pains as much as it is about the patient’s quality of life.
“If you have a spine and a nervous system you can benefit from chiropractic,” Dr. Kat said. “Chiropractic is about enhancing the quality of life for a person.”
As at any chiropractic clinic, Sparrow Family Chiropractic has tables that patients lay on while undergoing care. At Sparrow Family Chiropractic, however, of the two main treatment tables one is smaller than the other and is designed to looked like a rainbow-colored zebra. It even has a name: Paisley.
Dr. Kat said that Paisley is the table for small children including toddlers and infants. She said Paisley is designed to help her achieve her goals as a chiropractor of helping people see you are never too young and it is never too early to avail yourself of chiropractic care.
“One of my goals here is to get people to understand the value of chiropractic before pain sets in,” Dr. Kat said.
A native of Wilmington, NC, Sparrow did her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and graduated in 2014 from Sherman Chiropractic College in Spartanburg. After graduation, Sparrow worked in the Poconos in Pennsylvania but wasn’t happy there and began to look for a place to open her practice, a search that lead her to Jonesville.
“I liked the idea of a small town practice,” Dr. Kat said. “I feel like I really chose well. The community has really embraced me.”
While she and her son, Parks, and their dog, Louie, currently live in Spartanburg, Dr. Kat said she is looking to move closer to her practice within the next year.
Sparrow Family Chiropractic is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
