Eddie Tremain Gist, 31, 303 Stutts Ave., Union, and Jarrod Michael Burnett, 21, 414 Bailey Road, Buffalo, are each charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with grand larceny, three counts of petit larceny, and four counts of burglary second-degree non-violent.
Gist and Burnett are charged in connection with a break-in at a business at 1243 Riley Road, Union, on the night of Aug. 23. The incident report states the responding deputy noticed metal parts, tools and wires on the ground at the open gate on the morning of Aug. 24. The two large buildings on the property had been broken into. From one, $500 worth of scrap metal, parts and wire had been taken.
The second building, which housed four vehicles, had been vandalized with spray paint. One of the vehicles, a late 1980s model Toyota truck valued at $4,000 had been taken. A second vehicle, a black dual axle utility trailer valued at $3,000 had also been taken. The windows on the other two vehicles had been broken out. Damages to the property was estimated at $4,500.
Lt. Kenneth Riddle said the truck and the trailer were recovered in the course of the investigation.
Gist and Burnett were taken into custody Friday evening.
Shoplifting
Jimmy Lee Benefield III, 29,m 1418 Peach Orchard Road, Lot 18, Union, is charged by the Union Public Safety Department with shoplifting.
The incident report states an officer was dispatched Saturday afternoon to a business at 513 North Duncan Bypass in reference to a shoplifting. The store’s loss prevention officer had witnessed a black male later identified as Benefield opening a package and concealing items on his person. Benefield then exited the building but when confronted by the loss prevention officer voluntarily returned to the store.
Benefield was advised of his rights and agreed to talk to the responding officer. The report states an audio amp wire was found in Benefield’s right front pants pocket. He was arrested and transported to jail.
The wire, which was in the box Benefield is accused of opening, was valued at $21 and could not be resold.
Incidents
The following incidents are being investigated by the public safety department.
Vandalism
Pieces of asphalt were the apparent weapons of choice of the vandal or vandals who smashed in two glass doors of a former business on Lakeside Drive. The incident report states an offier on patrol pulled into the parking lot Monday morning and noticed the damage to the doors. The officer noticed three pieces of asphalt lying around the area, two them inside the building and one in front of the doors. The owner was called to the scene and with the officer went through the building but found nothing missing. Damage to the structure was estimated at $800.
More Vandalism
A vandal or vandals used rocks to smash 14 windows in a business at 1107 E. Main St., Union, sometime between 5 p.m. Friday and 5:35 p.m. Monday. The windows in the main building and several in the back storage building were shattered. The owner said that repairs would cost approximately $400.
Tires Slashed
A man who parked his truck in a fire department parking lot Friday evening got an unplesant surprise when he returned two hours later and found two of his tires had been slashed. The incident report states the victim parked his 1983 GMC truck in the parking lot on the Carlisle-Santuc Highway around 8 p.m. and when he returned around 10 p.m. he discovered the damage. The damage to the tires is estimated at $280.
Fire Extinguisher
A fire extinguisher was the weapon of choice of a vandal or vandals who did $600 worth of damage to a 1998 Ford Ranger truck sometime between 4 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. The report states that someone set a fire extinguisher on the outside of the vehicle and sprayed the inside. The truck was parked at 204 Pineland Road, Union, at the time of the incident.
Trunk Lid Damaged
It was parked under a carport but that didn't stop a vandal or vandals from doing $500 damage to a vehicle at 272 Old Buncombe Road, Union, sometime between 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The incident report states the lid to the vehicle's trunk was damaged.
Toy Gun
A toy gun found at the scene may be connected to the vandalism of a backhoe parked on Playground Drive in Bufffalo last week. The incident report states that sometime between 5 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday, someone busted the door window out of the backhoe causing an estimated $200 worth of damage. The responding officer noticed several large rocks which had apparently been thrown through the glass. The officer also noticed wrenches and pry bars on the ground which appeard to have been taken from the vehicle tool box. Also found at the scene was a child's plastic toy gun lying on the ground between the backhoe tracks. The toy gun, which the report states may have come from the suspect, was taken as evidence.
Door Damaged
Someone forced their way into a house at 211 McClure St., Union, sometime between 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. Friday causing $100 worth of damage. The person or persons forced their way in by prying open the back door damaging it and the frame. None of the victim's property was taken.
Outbuilding Again Broken Into
A man whose outbuilding at 4432 Whitmire Highway, Union, was broken into three months ago discovered someone had again broken into it sometime between 1 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Monday. The victim said nothing was missing but one door had been pried open and the lock on another cut off. The damage totaled $35.

Matthew William Ochiltree, 20, 104 Third Avenue, Union, charged Saturday with public drunk and consumption of beer under 21.
Timothy Lamar Smith, 19, 408 S. Mountain St., Union, charged Sunday with trespassing after notice.
Robbie Todd Leonard, 50, 104 Mill Ave., Union, charged Saturday with trespass after notice.
