South Carolina looked impressive vs. Southern Miss in a 41-13 victory. All eyes were on the Gamecocks’ quarterback situation. Starting quarterback Stephen Garcia looked strong on the Gamecocks’ first touchdown of the season with a powerful 22-yard touchdown run. Garcia added another rushing touchdown from three yards out vs. the Golden Eagles Thursday night.
Garcia did not throw a touchdown but his back-up Connor Shaw connected with D.L. Moore on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Byrnes’ product and Gamecock freshman running back Marcus Lattimore led the team in rushing yards with 54 yards and matched Garcia with two rushing touchdowns.
The Gamecocks’ true test will be Saturday at noon when the Georgia Bulldogs come to Williams-Brice Stadium. Georgia defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 55-7 in last week’s season opener.
The Bulldogs and Gamecocks kick it off at noon on ESPN.
No. 1 Alabama bullied San Jose St. in a 43-8 win. No. 4 Florida overcame errors to defeat Miami (OH) 34-12. The Arkansas Razorbacks ranked No. 17 handled Tennessee Tech 44-3. LSU won 30-24 over a depleted UNC team. No. 22 Auburn doubled up on Arkansas St. 52-26.
This week will present real challenges for several Top 25 SEC teams.
No. 22 Auburn travels to Mississippi State for a Thursday night game. No. 1 Alabama plays host to Penn State Saturday at 7 p.m., and No. 21 travels to Nashville, TN to face the Vanderbilt Commodores.

The Clemson Tigers needed the ball only 18:08 in Saturday’s 35-10 victory over North Texas. The Tigers were able to lead in rushing yards, penalties and turnover ration categories despite the relatively short time of possession.
The Presbyterian College Blue Hose travel to Death Valley for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday. Wake Forest defeated Presbyterian College last week 53-13.
Virginia Tech played the opening week’s best game, when No. 3 Boise State came to Landover, Md. for a must-win. Boise State scored the go ahead touchdown with 1:09 remaining in the game to defeat the No. 10 Hokies 33-30.
Virginia Tech faces James Madison Saturday.
Miami travels to Columbus, OH to challenge the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes. The Hurricanes tout a No. 13 ranking and are coming off a 45-0 shutout vs. Florida A&M. This game is sure to be a game to remember.
Florida State looked like the Seminoles of old in a 59-6 win Saturday.
Head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles will need the same firepower Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at No. 7 Oklahoma.
No. 16 Georgia Tech plays at Kansas Saturday.
