They didn’t get inside, but the would-be burglar or burglars who tried to break into a church’s storage building still managed to do some damage.

The incident report states a Union County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched Thursday to 673 Neal Shoals Road, Union, in reference to an attempted burglary. The complainant told the deputy he observed the two garage doors to the storage building behind the church had been damaged in what appeared to be an attempt to get inside.

The deputy observed the bottom of the door was bowed out and raised approximately 1 inch off the ground where someone had attempted to open it. The complainant said the door was padlocked and the lock didn’t appear to have been tampered with. Nothing else at the church appeared to be damaged.

The compalinant said he was at the church Aug. 30 around 4 p.m. to collect the trash and the door was fine at the time. He said he believed the attempted break-in occurred sometime between then and Thursday evening.

Damage to the door was estimated at $500.

Sign Stolen

Their attempt also failed, but the burlgar or burglars who tried to break into an outbuilding on the Sardis Road did manage to steal a sign off its wall.

The victim told the responding deputy sometime between 8 a.m. Aug. 28 and 8 a.m. Sept. 1, someone tried to break into one of his outbuildings at 663 Sardis Road, Union. The incident report states it appeared someone tried to pry the oubuilding’s doors open with some sort of sharp object.

The victim said a Canada Dry spur sign was stolen off the side of the building. The sign is valued at $300.

Bicyles Stolen

The Union Public Safety Department is investigating the theft of two bicyles from a residence at 206 E. South St., Union, sometime between Aug. 23 and 7:45 p.m. Aug. 30. The bicyles — a green Surge 20-inch boy’s bicycle and a blue Abyss boy’s 20-inch bicycle — were stolen from beneath the residence’s carport. The bicycles have a combined value of $135.

Malicious Damage

Deputies are investigating an incident involving the vandalism of a white 1995 Toyota Corolla that occurred on the Berry Farm Road on Thursday evening. Damage to the vehicle totaled $80 and included a broken windshield wiper and boken face of the vehicle’s radio.
