The Union County Sheriff’s Office is investigating three cases of flim-flam and possible attempted flim-flam. In the first instance, a Jonesville man reported Thursday he got an email on his computer claiming to be from the FBI stating money had been put into his account. Believing it to be a flim-flam, the man did not reply to the email but instead contacted the sheriff’s office. He also provided deputies with two letters from his email as evidence.
In the second instance, a Union man said he received a phone call Thursday afternoon from a person who identified himself as an employee of CitiBank. The caller told the man he owed the company $9,000 on his credit card account. The victim told the caller he never owned a credit card in his life. The caller replied that he was going to turn it over to collections and then hung up. The victim said the caller gave him the last four digits of his Social Security number but woud not give him the whole number when asked.
The third instance occurred Thursday morning when the victim received an email asking him to reconfirm his online banking account information. The email stated his account had been logged into after several failed attempts and if he didn’t reconfirm his account information the account would be indefinitely suspended. The victim, a Lockhart resident, said the email was purportedly from USAA customer service but that his banking is through a local bank. He said he did not reply to the email but notified his bank. A copy of the email was provided to the sheriff’s office by the victim.
