The incident report filed with the Union County Sheriff's Office states the victim had offered to sell the trumpet online through Craigslist on Aug. 10 for $200 and immediately received an email from someone who said they would buy it for that price. The victim received another email that claimed the agency's secretary had made a mistake and sent a check for $2,225. The woman said she did receive a check via UPS for $2,225 on Aug. 27 and followed the email instructions to return the overage via Western Union to a man at an address in Chicago. The instructions told her to deduct the Western Union fee from the overage and so she ended up paying the company $120 and then sent the man in Chicago $1,880.
The victim was then advised by her bank the original check was invalid and she was responsible for covering it. She said she immediately contacted Western Union which was able to refund her money because the man in Chicago had not claimed it. The woman had also not sent the trumpet so she did not incur any monetary or property loss.
The report states the victim has the original receipts and will make copies available to investigators. She was also advised not to delete any email information from her computer so the sheriff's office can continue its investigation.
