While he appreciates its importance, Fourth Congressional District candidate Trey Gowdy says the federal government role should be limited by the Constitution and on the basis of the soundness and affordability of its policies.
Gowdy was the principal speaker at an event sponsored by the Union County Republican Party Tuesday evening at Andy’s. Also present was SC House District 42 candidate Randall English who spoke of giving the people of Union County a conservative choice in the November election and then introduced Gowdy.
Gowdy described himself as a “limited government conservative” who judges all government policies based on three questions. First, is it constitutional? Second, is it sound public policy? Third, is it affordable?
As a solicitor, Gowdy said he learned about the hope people have for this country and the evils we face every day. He said his experience gave him an appreciation for the roles of government but also the knowledge that government is not a cure all.
Gowdy expressed concerns about prayer in school and judges legislating from the bench as well as the policies currently being pursued by the federal government.
"This country is at a crossroads, which is an over-used word, but it is true, “ Gowdy said. “We are at a crossroads in foreign policy and within the culture. It is hard to believe our toughest rhetoric is saved for Arizona and not for Iran and two of our strongest allies, Great Britain and Israel who have stated they do not know where the United States stands with them."
Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett, Union County Clerk of Court Freddie Gault, and State Sen. Shane Martin also attended the event.
