The Yellow Jackets girls’ tennis team finished runners-up in the Highway 221 Eye Opener Tournament held this past weekend.

In the first match UCHS won 4-2 over Southside Christian.

Winners in the morning match were Kelsey Harris (6-0, 6-0 over McGinley), Brittany Ledford (6-4, 6-1 over Knutson), Logan Wade (6-3, 6-0 over Kemble) and Rachel Jones and Dexlie Inman (6-3, 6-1 over Phillips and Teague). Lauren Harrison fell to Tutman (1-6, 2-6) and Kristen Martin lost her match to Platt (4-6, 5-7).

In the championship match, the Yellow Jackets lost 5-1 to Dorman.

Adalaide Adamo stepped in to play her first varsity match losing to Dorman's Joy Anna Pellegrino. Lauren Harrison came from behind to play a great match, but fell 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 8-10 to Swift. Kristen Martin moved up to play #2 singles and lost 1-6, 1-6 to Graham. Brittany Ledford lost to Li 1-6,1-6 and Rachel Jones and Dexlie Inman battled to a 4-6,6-7 (5-7) defeat to Jones and Phan. Logan Wade got the lone Jackets win playing up a spot in singles with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over Carson Pelligrino.

Wade and Harrison were named to the all-tournament team. Wade was recognized for her undefeated effort in all three matches.

Head coach Kelly Jenkins said she was pleased with the team’s efforts.

“Harrison played great tennis against very good competition in every match,” Jenkins said.

The Jackets will face some tournament opponents again in upcoming regular season matches.

“It was great to get in these preseason matches before we start a tough schedule, beginning this week against 4A Spartanburg and Dorman. I was proud of the way we played for most of the tournament. We definitely had high hopes of winning the tournament, but we ran into a tough Dorman team after a long day of tennis. We also were without one of our top singles and doubles players with Kelsey Harris being out in the championship game,” Jenkins added.

“We have some young players really working hard to improve and we will work with some different line ups to see what our best chances of winning will be,” Jenkins said.
