Union County High School’s first regular season varsity football game is here — finally.
The Jackets travel tonight to battle a familiar season opening opponent.
The Spartanburg Vikings are coming off a splendid playoff run last year and head coach Freddie Brown looks to improve in 2010.
Union County had their own spectacular push towards a state title in ‘09 and can make a statement tonight with a huge road win in Spartanburg.
The Vikings have several weapons to watch for when the game kicks it off at 7:30 p.m.
Quarterback Adrian Kollock brings experience to the huddle and the 6’2”, 190-pound senior is very athletic and dangerous on bootleg and play-action plays.
South Carolina commitment Ronnie Martin does it all for the Vikings. The Jackets will need to contain Martin on kick returns and Union County’s secondary will need to know where #4 is at all times.
The Jackets will look to score early and often against its Big 16 rival.
The Jackets’ offense is led by sophomore quarterback Keiston Smith. Smith and company must secure the ball and rule the clock.
Defensively, the Vikings will use multiple offensive looks depending on Union County’s formation.
The Jackets’ defense is led by nine seniors and will need more than one of the 11 defenders to step it up and play big. Linebackers Deon Smith, Jordan Sims and Wesley Jeter are key to tonight’s success.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College.
