No one likes losing, especially on their home field. Although Friday night's abbreviated game vs. Mid-Carolina does not count towards the season’s standings, the Yellow Jackets take the loss seriously.

"We've got work to do," UCHS head coach David Lipsey told players after the 12-7 loss.

Mid-Carolina took advantage of great field position late in the game to score both touchdowns vs. the Yellow Jackets at the Union County Scrimmage.

Union County's only score came from running back Michael Johnson, who took the handoff from quarterback Keiston Smith and outraced the defenders for a 62-yard score. After Robert Shetley's successful PAT, the Jackets led 7-0.

The Jackets next possession was not as successful as the last.

Mid-Carolina stripped the ball from Smith and took over at the Union County 21-yard line. Four plays later, running back Clarence Turner rushed to the end zone for the score. A failed two-point conversion allowed Union County to maintain a 7-6 lead.

Union County's next possession resulted in lost yardage due to a holding penalty and a snap over Smith's head. On 4th and 31, Union County punter William Holcombe was forced to punt from his own end zone.

Mid-Carolina returned the punt to the Union County 39-yard line before delivering the final blows.

Mid-Carolina's first play from scrimmage kept the clock running as they picked up 12 yards on the ground.

On the next play, the Jackets committed another penalty with a defensive offsides call that would give Mid-Carolina first and five from the Jackets 22. Two plays later senior defensive end Desmond Floyd hawked down the runner to set up third and short. Mid-Carlolina converted to pick up a key first down — and more importantly — contiuned burning the clock. Three straight Mid-Carolina running plays gained 12 yards to set up first and goal. The final seconds ticked as the offense hurried to the ball. Mid-Carolina attempted a quarterback sneak, but the Jackets defense stuffed the middle and denied the attempt.

The Jackets led 7-6 when Mid-Carolina quarterback Kendall Lathrop hurried to the line and spiked the ball. The incomplete pass stopped the clock and the teams huddled before the game's final play.

Mid-Carolina broke the huddle, came to the line, and took the inside handoff one yard for the score. The touchdown was the final play of the game and no PAT was attempted.

The Yellow Jackets kick the regular season off next week at Gibbs Stadium vs. Spartanburg. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

JV action

Mid-Carolina’s JV team punched it in on its second and final possession to outscore the Yellow Jackets, 8-7.

Each team had only two offensive possessions in the scrimmage and both produced a touchdown.

Union County scored first on a 52-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Dakota Ivester. Brandon Shetley’s PAT was good and Jackets led 7-0.

Mid-Carolina bounced back on its next drive and scored on a five-yard run to cut the Jackets lead to one. Mid-Carolina went for the kill and successful converted on the two-point coversion for the 8-7 victory.

Spartanburg 28, Woodruff 0

Spartanburg forced four Woodruff turnovers en route to a 28-0 victory at the Union Scrimmage Friday night.

The Vikings picked off Woodruff quarterback Ryan Perkins three times and returned one for a touchdown.

Vikings junior quarterback Adrian Kollock rushed for two touchdowns and was 2-for-5 with two interceptions.

Running back Tyquan Garner contributed the other Vikings score.
