The incident report states deputies were dispatched just before 6 a.m. Saturday to 140 Mitchell Road, Union, in response to a car being driven into a house. Deputies spoke with the victim who told them someone had driven a car into her residence. The deputies observed a white 1998 Grand Prix sitting near the front of the building. Tire marks from the damaged part of the trailer led to the vehicle.
The report states the victim was at first very vague with her details of the incident and being uncooperative in the investigation. A witness, however, told deputies Roberts was the driver of the car and had rammed into the building on purpose following a verbal altercation with the victim. He said he did not know where Roberts went only that he fled out the back door.
The deputies searched for Roberts in the immediate area but were unable to locate him. They then spoke with the victim and asked her if she was injured. She said she had been sprayed with pepper spray during the altercation with Roberts. She was then transported by EMS to Wallace Thomson Hospital’s emergency room for treatment.
As deputies were leaving the scene, the report states the Grand Prix’s lights came on and the vehicle began to pull out of the driveway. They turned around and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of Santuc-Carlisle Highway and Beltline Road. The driver of the Pontiac, identified as Roberts, however, would not stop even though deputies were using their lights and sirens. They called dispatch to report they were in pursuit of the vehicle.
Deputies pursued Roberts into Spartanburg County then back into Union County then back again into Spartanburg County. During the 56.3 mile chase, speeds ranged from 35 miles per hour to more than 100 miles per hour.
Roberts was apprehended after a foot pursuit in a wooded area on Foster Mill Circle in the Pauline area of Spartanburg County. He was taken into custody and transported to the Union County Jail.
There were no accidents, no property was damaged and no one was injured during the course of the chase. Deputies were assisted in their pursuit and apprehension of Roberts by the highway patrol, the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Pacolet Police Department.
The report states following Roberts’ arrest, a deputy met with the victim who gave a written statement about the incident. When asked why she didn’t want to cooperate initially, the victim said she was afraid Roberts was still in the area and could hear her speaking to the deputies. She said she was afraid if they didn’t apprehend Roberts he would come and assault her for cooperating with law enforcement.
Once Roberts was in custody, however, the report states the victim was cooperative in the investigation.
The deputy asked the victim about the pepper spray and she said she kept it on her key ring because she knew she would have to use it one day on Roberts.
The report states Roberts has a history of domestic violence against the victim.
