District 5 incumbent Orangelow Ruff has filed for re-election.
“For Union to be competitive, we are going to have to be service-ready, educationally ready and skill-ready,” Ruff said.
She also stated she is dedicated to Union because of how much people have done for her.
Ruff — a retired school teacher — will be challenged by former public safety officer and local restaurant owner David “Tubo” Owens. Owens stated his involvement in government work for more than 30 years makes him a qualified candidate.
“I believe in my town,” Owens said, “and would like to see more improvements in the city.”
District 1 incumbent Tommie Hill has also filed for re-election. Hill — now retired — served for 31 years as a police officer with the City of Union. He stated he would like to see more family oriented entertainment — similar to what has resulted from the development of the Timken Sports Complex — come to Union.
Hill will be challenged by Jackie Earls, Jr., who ran for the seat in 2006.
“I would like to have the opportunity to help Union get on the right track,” Earls said.
District 2 incumbent Robert Garner has also filed for re-election, and will be running unopposed.
“I appreciate the people who feel comfortable with me being there, and I pledge my support,” Garner said. “I will do my best — not only for citizens in my district, but all City of Union citizens.”
