LOCKHART — Facebook is good for more than just social networking and students, teachers, parents and friends in Lockhart are taking advantage of the Web site to benefit Lockhart Schools.

Kohl’s Cares — Kohl’s Department Store charitable works division — is giving away 20 grants in the amount of $500,000 each to 20 different schools. The 20 schools with the most votes will receive the $500,000 grants for additional construction.

When Lockhart guidance counselor Jennifer Seeman was notified about the contest, she dove head first into a Facebook campaign.

“It is not mathematically impossible for us to win,” Seeman said. “There are people in Missouri and Nebraska that voted for us.”

Seeman hopes that every parent will vote and get friends and family members to follow suit.

“Now is the perfect time to show Grandma how to create a Facebook page, even if she doesn’t use it again after she votes,” she added, mentioning that it only takes a couple minutes to start a Facebook page.

Seeman also mentioned she has hounded friends all over the country about voting for Lockhart.

Those who vote will also have an opportunity to post ideas of what should be done with the grant money if awarded.

“Although we have a beautiful school, it could definitely use some upgrades,” said Lockhart Principal Betsy Trakas. “This school was built in 1954.”

Everyone on Facebook gets a total of 20 votes, with a maximum of five votes per school. Once people become a “fan” of Kohl’s on Facebook, they will have the opportunity to vote for the school(s) of their choice.

During an open house to be held on August 31, Lockhart Schools will open several computer stations where staff and parent volunteers will be on hand to assist people in voting.
