Webster’s dictionary defines a fan best, “an enthusiastic follower or admirer.”
Union County Yellow Jacket fans’ actions speak for its claim as the #1 fans in the world.
Fans dressed in black and gold make the ride after work to stop by the school to see the Yellow Jackets practice in 100 degree weather. They show up for scrimmages that mean nothing to the team’s record, but to Yellow Jacket fans it gives them much more.
They want to know who we have and how the Jackets are peforming. Ultimately they want to know who is going to be the rising stars.
Tonight, expect fans to come out and show their support for the home team as the UCHS varsity and junior varsity teams will play vs. Mid-Carolina.
“Only in Union.”
Yeah, only in Union County will fans sit in the blistering rain as their mighty Jackets fight, fight, fight, In a 1997 playoff game at Seneca the rain poured the entire night and fans sacrificed their coats during the freezing rain to help keep the team warm,
Yellow Jackets fans are the only fans I know that arrive at the visiting stadium before the team’s buses. Sometimes even the fans travel in buses to see the game, like the upper state championship game at Daniel in 1999.
When a player sees that type of support, it sends chils over his body and ignites the desire to give back to them with a victory.
Expect nothing but love tonight when the Jackets suit up and the stadium lights come on. The night will be filled with tradition as Yellow Jacket football kickoff another season.
This year’s Yellow Jacket football team will make you a fan, if you are not already in love.
