Louvenia Gory, 61, of 103 Gilead Hills Drive, Jonesville, was driving a 1995 Thomas school bus south on T Bishop Road outside of Jonesville when the bus — carrying 62 students — crossed the center line around 7:30 a.m. According to Lance Cpl. Billy Elder, community relations officer for Troop 4, which includes Union County, of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, when the bus crossed the center of the road, its driver’s side mirror struck the driver’s side mirror of a 2000 Nissan utility-type truck being driven by Bruce Hopper, 60, of Livingston, Texas, who was heading south.
The shattered glass from those mirrors crossing entered the school bus and caused minor injuries to Gory who was transported to Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union following the accident.
None of the bus’ other passengers or Hopper were injured in the incident and there was no other body damage to either vehicle outside the mirrors at the point of impact.
Gory was cited for driving left of center.
Union County School District Safety and Security Coordinator Randy Crocker said the district is taking no other action in regard to the incident. He added Gory will be required to undergo a drug test as mandated by state law in the event of a school bus being involved in an accident where someone is injured and transported to a healthcare facility or a vehicle is towed from the scene.
Crocker said the accident was unfortunate but the district is glad no one was seriously injured.
“We feel really fortunate no one else was hurt,” he said.
